Matrix (Addiction Outpatient)

What is the Matrix Model?

The Matrix Model, Intensive Outpatient (IOP), is a multi-element package that consists of relapse prevention groups, education groups, social-support groups, individual counseling, substance screening, and includes education for family members.

A therapist is provided to function simultaneously as a teacher and a coach. The therapist is trained to conduct treatment sessions in a way that promotes the patient’s self-esteem, dignity, and self-worth.

Groups are between 12-15 participants

Drug screening facilitated on-site ($25 client pay)

Assessments (required) conducted while client is incarcerated

Presumptive eligibility offered

The program will last at least 16 weeks

• The extension of the program may be due to relapse and a requirement to review the early recovery skills portion of the model

• If absences occur, the client will make up that session

• Attendance is required at every session

Program Focus and Treatment

The elements of effective treatment for the Matrix Model include:

Focusing on the present; behavior vs feelings

Program structure consists of meeting 3 times/week, 2 hours/session for 16 weeks

Providing information on addiction and recovery

Teaching relapse prevention

Introducing and encouraging self-help

Drug screening; including swab or breathalyzer
