Recreation Therapist

Assess patient needs. Plan, provide, and evaluate activity/recreation therapy services to Center patients. Consult and supervise as needed.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities |

- Prepare and implement individualized recreation assessment treatment plans on each client.
- Plan and conduct recreation therapy sessions (i.e., recreational, skills training).
- Facilitate client participation in recreation therapy sessions.
- Evaluate and document client progress.
- Inventory and maintain supplies and equipment for recreation therapy sessions.
- Supervise volunteers and/or students assigned to recreation therapy programs and recreation assistant.
- Periodic coordination of specific RT services requiring participation of more than one staff member.
- Participate in clinical staffings and interdisciplinary plan meetings as assigned.
- Schedule use of public, private, and commercial facilities.
- Participate in quality assurance and staff development sessions.
- Maintain working knowledge of functioning/maintenance/safety procedures pertaining to department equipment such as tools, audio visuals, and recreational supplies.
- Maintain a safe environment for patient participation.
- Consult with and provide RT services to community agencies (i.e., nursing homes) as assigned.
- Assist clients, their families and friends with linkages to outpatient community support programs.
- Assign responsibilities of recreation program to recreation therapy staff and psychiatric technicians.
- Ability to demonstrate competent use of Profiler.
- Carry out recreation therapy program within designated budget.
- Contribute recreational skills that enhance the recreation therapy program.
- Completion of required CANS and/or ANSA training and ongoing certification.
- Timely completion of HAP paperwork and reassessments within specified deadlines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities |
This position directly supervises the Recreation Assistant. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Hamilton Center’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements |
- Bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation or related field.
- Two years experience in related area.
- Knowledge and skills in basic mental illness symptomatology, rehabilitation and habilitative principles/modalities, recreational and skill training activities.
- Oral and written communication; interviewing skills.
- Willingness to use personal transportation in work capacity.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations |
- Indiana chauffeur's license in good standing.
- Certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS)
- Maintain current American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certifications
- Maintain current CPI certification

- Walking, standing, sitting, reaching, bending as required in provision of recreation therapy program.
- Completion of tuberculin screening no later than three days prior to first day of employment and annually thereafter
- Completion of a pre-employment drug screening and completion of post-employment drug or alcohol tests upon reasonable suspicion of use.
- Completion of Center-wide orientation and ALL required paperwork prior to reporting for work
- Demonstrated computer literacy through successful completion of pre-employment testing may be required.
- Completion of HCI Quality training
- Attendance at all mandatory staff development and training
- Successful completion of a six month on the job orientation period
- Participation in payroll electronic deposit
- Adherence to Compliance Program Plan
- Satisfactory reference and background investigation checks.
