Nurse Practitioner, IPU

Position Summary

Under supervision of the Medical Director, or his/her designee, provide assigned nursing and medical services within the limits and scope of training and license.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Obtain relevant health and medical history and perform physical exams for assigned patients, both inpatient and outpatient.
  • Function as a special assistant to the Medical Director with duties assigned as needed to support Medical Services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
  • R.N. with a M.S. Degree as a Nurse Practitioner
  • At least two years of experience in mental health setting (preferable inpatient services).
  • Understanding of current mental health treatment.
  • Knowledge of diagnoses and treatment of the severely mentally ill and/or addicted person.
  • Willingness to use personal transportation in work capacity.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Indiana License as Registered Nurse with M.S. Degree as Nurse Practitioner.
  • National Certification preferred.
  • Maintain current American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Maintain current CPI certification.
  • Valid Driver’s License in accordance with motor vehicle policy
Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Exposure to possible agitated patients is limited but possible. Job stress ranges from low to intense depending on situation.

  • Standing, walking, bending, stooping as required to provide individualized patient care.
  • Possesses strength necessary to direct and assist in implementation of CPI interventions.
Work Environment

Most of the work of the nurse practitioner is done directly with consumers in Center facilities, which provide a comfortable physical environment with consumers. On occasion the nurse practitioner may see clients either in their homes or in community settings. Office and program areas may not be air-conditioned and could become overly warm in summer months. Work conditions, such as cleanliness, comfort and safety, may vary widely. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Smoking is permitted only outside of program and office sites. Safety management and crisis intervention decisions and actions are dependent on staff present. Crises may arise which may be stress producing and/or be exhausting.

Conditions of Employment
  • Completion of tuberculin screening no later than three days prior to first day of employment and annually thereafter
  • Completion of a pre-employment drug screening and completion of post-employment drug or alcohol tests upon reasonable suspicion of use.
  • Completion of Center-wide orientation and ALL required paperwork prior to reporting for work
  • Demonstrated computer literacy through successful completion of pre-employment testing may be required.
  • Completion of HCI Quality training
  • Attendance at all mandatory staff development and training
  • Successful completion of a six month on the job orientation period
  • Participation in payroll electronic deposit
  • Adherence to Compliance Program Plan
  • Satisfactory reference and background investigation checks.
