Employment Specialist

Develops, trains and maintains competitive employment opportunities in business and industry for persons with disabilities. Serves as program/services manager for persons employed in the community. Interacts with employers in business settings and coordinates services for the consumer with Vocational Rehabilitation and other human service agencies.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities |

- Serves as an advocate for the consumer; providing the opportunity, training and support needed to enable the individual to make and implement informed choices about employment services.
- Provides program management for consumers in competitive community employment. Develop and implement Individual Habilitation Plans that assist persons in seeking and retaining employment. May have specialized caseloads.
- Schedules and facilitates interdisciplinary team meetings including annual conference, progress reviews and special conferences as needed. Reviews and modify plans as necessary.
- Assists persons with disabilities in obtaining appropriate competitive employment, ensuring job match consistent with individual goals. Establishes and maintains effective community employment contracts and sites working closely with local employers to develop job opportunities.
- Learns the duties of the selected jobs sufficiently in order to provide the level, intensity and duration of job skill training needed by the consumer to maintain employment.
- Provides on-going follow-up and support services to the consumer services to the consumer to assist them in adjusting to and maintaining their employment. Assists individuals in accessing other community resources.
- Provides information to community at large, social service agencies and other human service providers regarding the goals and purposes of Employment Services. Coordinates and works closely with consumer, families, friends, Vocational rehabilitation and other human service agencies in order to provide quality employment services.
- Prepares and maintains current and accurate billing and service records, reports, correspondence and other program documents.
- Conducts Job Readiness Training, Job Seeking Skills, and Job Club as scheduled.
- Works flexible schedule including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Meets regularly with supervisor to exchange pertinent information and receive supervision.
- Participates in meetings, in-services, projects and activities as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements |
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Degree in rehabilitation, education, mental health or related field preferred.
- Certification as Employment Training Specialist preferred.
- One (1) year experience in rehabilitation required with at least one (1) year experience in employment skills, English usage and interpersonal skills.
- Written and oral communication skills, English usage and interpersonal skills.
- Will be required to use personal transportation in work capacity and transport clients.
- Can accommodate flexible schedule to meet client needs including evenings, weekends and holidays.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations |
- Valid Driver’s license in accordance with MVL policy
- Maintains current American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification
- CPI Certification (as required by supervisor)
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person or by telephone. The employee must be able to travel to client locations. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally must sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
Work is performed in community and home sites and in the office. Stress can result from conflicting priorities, limited back-up coverage and having to work flexible schedule.
- Completion of tuberculin screening no later than three days prior to the first day of employment and annually thereafter.
- Completion of pre-employment drug screening and completion of post-employment drug or alcohol tests upon reasonable suspicion of use.
- Completion of center-wide orientation and ALL required paperwork prior to reporting for work.
- Completion of HCI’s Commitment to Quality raining.
- Attendance at all mandatory staff development and training.
- Successful completion of a six month on the job orientation period.
- Participation in payroll electronic deposit.
- Adherence to Compliance Program Plan
- Satisfactory reference and background investigation checks.
- Satisfactory completion of an Indiana Department of Child Services criminal fingerprinting background check at the time of hire and every four years (or at contract renewal when applicable) for any employee that has direct contact on a regular and continuing basis with DCS and IVB clients
